Part 3

Chapter twenty-six

In my dream, I stood before a monstrous creature. One moment, we were staring at each other, and the next—I ran. The ground shook as the beast tore after me through a strange land. While he walked on two feet, he gave chase on four massive paws, biting at my heels with pointed fang-like teeth.

Running for my life, I dodged emerald green leaves from low-hanging branches. I skirted through an unusual forest, jumping over low thorny, burgundy bushes that nicked at my skin when I got too close. Leaping into the air, I cleared gigantic, molted centipedes trying to grab me with pincers the size of my hands. A large bird swooped just above my head with razor-sharp talons large enough to carry me away. My heart pounded as those vice grips tried to grab me.

Darting around a tree, I punched the crimson bird as hard as possible, my fist landing wherever it could. I only pissed it off. The bird flew straight up, turned, and dive-bombed me with a determined vengeance. How do you fight a bird? The next time it came down for me, my wolf’s paw had melded with my human hand. My claws slashed upward, nailing the attacking creature’s leg. “Yes,” I muttered between ragged breaths, admiring the rather nasty slash I’d left dripping blueish blood from the retreating bird. Screeches of pain bellowed as it landed on a nearby branch. Its eyes bore into me as I passed it. I listened for the flapping of wings as my legs carried me away.

Oh, my Goddess, the earth quaked! Was it the end of time? Hell no, the four-legged beast was moving again, causing the earth to rumble under the assault of each step. I ran to the edge of a cliff, trying to determine if I would survive the jump. It was at least a fifty-foot drop into rushing liquid the color of dark urine. Still, I considered it until I watched the rocks move. The beast was closing the gap between us fast. I looked between him and the rushing water below. Something deep inside me was screaming, but I didn’t have the time to listen. Everything was happening so damned fast. Jumping felt wrong, but what else could I do?

Fight?

Could I fight that enormous giant of a thing? On four legs, he stood as tall as I did. Muscles bulged beneath wet cement-colored skin. He was fast, but I was faster, though I had no place to run. I ran along the cliff, watching the beast stalk me.

“Who are you?” I finally spun to ask.

Eyes the size of Itsy’s fists blinked at me with confusion. His language was foreign, but I knew exactly what he was saying. “Garth, the protector of innocence.”

My head bobbed around like Pepper’s as I looked at Garth. “Then why aren’t you protecting me?” I yelled at him.

“The innocent do not come here.” Garth’s voice hurt my ears. He sounded like a machine digging up the road. His head turned to the side, with one eye staring at me, and then he turned using his other eye.
